Vietnam's Electricity Infrastructure Faces Urgent Expansion to Meet Growth Targets
Vietnam's electricity sector must nearly double its capacity to 183,000 MW by 2030 to support the country's economic growth. The current installed capacity is approximately 87,600 MW, highlighting a critical need for rapid development of new power sources and infrastructure.

To address projected energy demands, Vietnam's electricity system must increase its capacity significantly, requiring about 20,000 MW of new power each year until 2030. Key projects include the Tri An Hydropower Plant, which will add 200 MW by 2027, and the 1,200 MW Bac Ai Pumped-Storage Hydropower Plant, aimed at balancing renewable energy output.
The Quang Trach II LNG power plant, with a projected capacity of 1,500 MW and expected operation by 2028-2029, will enhance the gas baseload power supply. Currently, EVN has invested nearly VND500,000 billion in the last five years and plans to allocate approximately $25 billion for infrastructure over the next five years, with a dependency on other investors for additional capacity. Ensuring a stable and sufficient electricity supply is vital for sustaining high economic growth.
