Villagers in Papua New Guinea Challenge Santos Over $16B Gas Project
Communities in Papua New Guinea are contesting a $16 billion gas project led by Santos and TotalEnergies, citing rights violations. The project, involving the Elk and Antelope gas fields, faces scrutiny as local villagers demand consultation and transparency.

Villagers in Papua New Guinea are challenging Santos, which holds a 22.8% stake in the Papua LNG project, alleging violations of their rights. TotalEnergies is set to decide on project progression in 2026.
The project includes developing gas fields and a 320km pipeline to a new LNG plant near Port Moresby, with a capacity of 5.6 million tonnes per year. Local concerns include lack of consent for land use and potential environmental impacts from waste discharge permits valid for 35 years.
Santos leadership acknowledged the villagers' concerns and indicated plans for a development forum with landowners. Santos shares dropped nearly 2% to $2.59 amid these developments.
