Virginia Allocates $50 Million for Richmond's Sewer System Improvements
Richmond's sewer system is set to receive $50 million in state funding as part of Virginia's budget, aimed at supporting the combined sewer overflow control project. This funding follows a request for $80 million for broader water infrastructure needs. Mayor Danny Avula's proposed budget includes a total utility rate increase per residence and anticipates higher expenditures for public works. The budget discussions will continue through spring, with emphasis on necessary infrastructure improvements.

Virginia plans to allocate $50 million to Richmond's sewer system improvements, specifically for the combined sewer overflow control project, as part of the upcoming budget finalized during a special legislative session starting April 23. This funding is less than the $80 million Mayor Danny Avula requested for various water infrastructure needs.
The proposed budget includes a $13.84 utility rate increase per residence and anticipates a 20% rise in the Department of Public Works expenditures, from $505 million to $605 million by fiscal year 2027. City Council will review the budget through spring.
