Viriato Fernandes, Lok Sabha MP from South Goa, received a notice from the Election Commission of India (ECI) to provide documents proving his identity to retain his voter registration. This incident has raised concerns among opposition parties and civil groups regarding the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process, which may lead to legitimate voters being removed from the electoral rolls.
The Chief Electoral Office (CEO) in Goa clarified that Fernandes's enumeration form was categorized as 'unmapped,' triggering the automatic issuance of a hearing notice due to missing mandatory details. The CEO confirmed that the case is under inquiry. Fernandes has a history of voting since 1989 and has traveled frequently to Goa during his 26 years of service in the Indian Navy to participate in elections.
