VNIT Develops Lightweight Bulletproof Jackets for Troops
Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology (VNIT) has developed a lightweight bulletproof jacket weighing 7.5 kg, utilizing composite materials and aluminum, with plans to reduce the weight to under 6 kg. Successful test firings against 7.62 mm bullets have been conducted, and the institute is also exploring shock-absorbing panels and other defense projects in collaboration with DRDO. Once the technology is validated, it will be made available to both public and private sectors.

The project started two years ago, and further weight reduction is being considered. VNIT also works on shock-absorbing panels for various applications and is engaged in other defense research projects referred by DRDO. Officials indicate that once the technology is validated, it will be available for public and private sector offers.
