Voestalpine Installs Hydrogen Compressors at Linz Steel Plant for Green Steel Production
Voestalpine has installed two compressors from Hiperbaric at its Linz facility to enhance hydrogen use in steelmaking. The €16.4m expansion, supported by Verbund and the EU, aims to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. The compressors will process hydrogen from a 6MW PEM electrolyser for direct reduced iron production, alongside a purification plant and storage tanks.

Voestalpine has installed two new hydrogen compressors from Hiperbaric at its Linz steel production facility as part of a €16.4m expansion aimed at meeting 2050 net-zero emissions targets. The compressors will process hydrogen generated from a 6MW PEM electrolyser for direct reduced iron production, replacing fossil fuels.
This project is a collaboration with Verbund and has received €12m in funding from the EU. The compressors allow hydrogen compression up to 500 bar and are integral to the H2Future plant's growth. Hiperbaric also utilizes emissions-reduced Greentec Steel from Voestalpine, achieving a cumulative CO2 savings of 430 tonnes.
