Volkswagen in Talks with Rafael Advanced Defense Systems for Defense Partnership in Germany
Volkswagen is discussing a partnership with Israel's Rafael Advanced Defense Systems to produce military components in Germany, aiming to transition from low-demand car assembly to missile and launcher manufacturing. The collaboration could potentially expand VW's Osnabrück facility, which employs 2,300 workers. This move aligns with a trend of automotive companies exploring defense opportunities amid weak car demand and rising military spending.

Volkswagen is negotiating a partnership with Rafael Advanced Defense Systems to manufacture military components in Germany, specifically linked to the 'Iron Dome' air defense system. This strategy aims to replace the production of low-demand vehicles, like the T-Roc Cabriolet, with components for missile systems and heavy trucks.
The company's Osnabrück facility currently employs 2,300 workers, and the partnership could lead to expansion opportunities. Other automakers, like Renault and Valmet, are also entering the defense sector, indicating a broader industry shift despite ethical concerns surrounding these conversions.
