Vulcan Launches NZ's Largest Rooftop Solar Installation for Aluminium Processing
Vulcan has implemented a 1.17 MWp rooftop solar system at its Hamilton facility in New Zealand, reducing its carbon footprint by over 35% and generating renewable energy for aluminium processing. This strategic move enhances Vulcan's energy independence and aligns with its decarbonisation objectives.

Vulcan has commissioned a 1.17 MWp rooftop solar installation, the largest in New Zealand's aluminium sector, to power its operations in Hamilton. The system will generate over 1,400 MWh of clean electricity annually, enough to power more than 200 homes and offset approximately 134 tonnes of CO2 each year.
This initiative reduces the carbon footprint of processed aluminium by more than 35%, reflecting Vulcan's strategic shift towards sustainable energy management. The project utilizes Sunergise's SunPlus™ Power Purchase Agreement, allowing Vulcan to finance the solar energy without upfront costs.
The mounting rails for the solar panels were produced using low-carbon aluminium sourced locally, emphasizing a commitment to reducing embodied carbon. This integration of manufacturing and renewable energy may set a precedent for further industrial symbiosis in New Zealand.
