Wales Gas-to-Energy Project Completion Delayed to Late 2026
The Wales Gas-to-Energy (GTE) project is now expected to commence by the last quarter of 2026, according to President Dr. Irfaan Ali, who announced a delay from the previous mid-2026 target. Minister of Natural Resources Vickram Bharrat confirmed the government is working with the contractor on a revised timeline due to earlier setbacks.
The GTE project, located in Wales on the West Bank of Demerara, includes a Natural Gas Liquids facility and a 300-megawatt power plant, aimed at reducing electricity bills by 50%. It will utilize natural gas transported from the offshore Stabroek Block's Liza field via a 12-inch pipeline, converting 50 million cubic feet of gas per day into electricity.
The project has encountered delays, including a $100 million expenditure to stabilize the site, which pushed back the timeline by 14 months. Additionally, a $422 million contract was awarded for extending transmission lines for the Guyana Power and Light.
