Watertown City Council Evaluates Job Cuts and Service Reductions for Budget Balance
Watertown City Council is contemplating substantial cuts to jobs and services in light of a projected $64 million budget for 2026-27. With payroll consuming a significant portion of the budget, the council aims to address a $200,000 annual deficit from the trash removal service.

The City Council of Watertown is planning potential cuts to 15 employee positions as part of its budget preparation for 2026-27. The proposed budget totals nearly $64 million, increasing by $5 million from the previous year, with approximately 75% allocated to employee payroll and benefits.
Additionally, the council is considering eliminating the city's trash removal service, which incurs a $200,000 annual loss. Budget discussions have also highlighted a reduction of $125,000 in expected sticker revenues. The city is facing future challenges, including the expiration of a hydropower contract with National Grid in 2030, which may impact financial stability.
