Watervliet Arsenal Completes Modernization Projects with New Gate and Fire Station
The U.S. Army has inaugurated the Gillespie Gate and a new mortar factory at Watervliet Arsenal, marking a $17.2 million investment. Additionally, a $39.5 million fire station is under construction to enhance emergency services and operational efficiency.

On April 13, 2026, the U.S. Army inaugurated the Gillespie Gate and completed a new mortar factory at Watervliet Arsenal, part of a larger modernization initiative announced in July 2023 that allocates over $1.7 billion to the facility.
The $17.2 million gate project enhances security and traffic flow for commercial vehicles, while the mortar factory consolidates production for improved efficiency. Construction has also begun on a $39.5 million fire station to replace the outdated facility from 1848, aimed at improving emergency response and safety. Watervliet Arsenal is critical for producing advanced military weaponry and supports local emergency services with 14 mutual aid agreements, responding to approximately 400 calls annually.
