The Wentworth Home in Dover has transitioned from an oil-fired boiler to a natural gas system, aiming to reduce annual fuel costs by over $50,000 and cut its carbon footprint by 40%. This upgrade is expected to lower greenhouse gas emissions from 418,000 pounds to 250,800 pounds annually, equivalent to removing 42 vehicles from the road each year.
The facility, built in 1897, utilized approximately 19,000 gallons of heating oil annually before the installation of a high-efficiency condensing boiler system with a 95% efficiency rating. Unitil collaborated with the Wentworth Home's maintenance team to ensure proper installation to meet gas needs. The move is projected to provide significant health benefits through improved indoor air quality and reduced maintenance requirements.
