Western Balkans Urged to Halt Gas Infrastructure Development
47 civil organizations advocate for the cessation of gas pipeline and power plant construction in the Western Balkans, emphasizing a shift to renewable energy. They warn that current plans could triple gas consumption by 2023 levels, leading to unsustainable economic dependence on fossil fuels.

Civil organizations are calling for Western Balkan governments to stop constructing gas pipelines and power plants, arguing that this would deepen gas dependency. Serbia continues to expand its gas network despite supply challenges, with a recent agreement for a 500 MW gas power plant in Niš.
The U.S. has supported projects such as the Greece-North Macedonia gas interconnector and LNG terminals in Montenegro and Albania. Analysts indicate that current plans may lead to a tripling of gas consumption compared to 2023 levels, posing risks of economic unsustainability and underutilized infrastructure. A shift towards solar and wind energy, along with improvements in energy efficiency, is advocated as essential for avoiding the EU's past gas dependency pitfalls.
