Westmoreland Coal Company Lays Off Over 60 Workers at Rosebud Mine
Westmoreland Coal Company has reduced its workforce at the Rosebud Coal Mine by more than 60 employees, attributing this to decreased demand driven by an unusually warm winter. The layoffs affect over 20% of the workforce, impacting coal supply to the Colstrip power plant.

Westmoreland Coal Company has laid off 63 workers at the Rosebud Coal Mine due to reduced coal demand linked to mild winter conditions. A total of 27 positions were cut in March, followed by 36 layoffs in April, resulting in a current workforce of 223.
The warm winter led to lower sales affecting the Colstrip power plant's operations. Additionally, low snowpack levels recorded at 26% of normal may impact hydropower generation during summer, potentially increasing reliance on coal. The company anticipates reinstating workers by the end of July, though this is subject to market conditions.
