Whyalla Steelworks Faces Viability Challenges Amid Gas Dependency
Whyalla steelworks is poised for a critical transition as it faces competition in a global shift towards green hydrogen. The reliance on gas, supported by a ten-year supply agreement, contrasts sharply with emerging technologies emphasizing renewable energy sources.

Whyalla steelworks has secured a gas supply of 200 PJ from Santos over ten years, yet this approach may hinder its competitiveness. Sweden's Stegra has acquired €1.4 billion to build a green hydrogen-powered steel plant, demonstrating a shift towards sustainable practices.
South Australia, despite a Green Iron and Steel Strategy, is reverting to gas, which is not competitive with green hydrogen alternatives. Global leaders like China Baowu and Europe’s Salzgitter are advancing projects that utilize green hydrogen from the outset. To enhance long-term viability, South Australia should focus on lowering green hydrogen costs and promoting its use in steel production, moving away from fossil fuel dependency.
