Woodfibre LNG Issued Non-Compliance Notice for Salmon Monitoring Failures in Squamish, B.C.

NATURAL GAS

Woodfibre LNG in Squamish, B.C., received a notice of non-compliance from the B.C. Environmental Assessment Office for failing to monitor juvenile salmon during construction, potentially endangering local salmon populations.

This non-compliance was noted in records made public on December 30, four months after the infraction occurred in August. Despite this violation, no fines have been imposed. The assessment office attributed the delay in public notification to a previous BC public service job action and the need to analyze additional information submitted by Woodfibre.

The LNG facility, under construction since fall 2023, is expected to produce up to 2.1 million tonnes of LNG annually. The Squamish Nation supports the project but is engaged in efforts to restore impacted areas of the Squamish River. Woodfibre LNG plans to enhance its monitoring program in response to the non-compliance notice.
