WPU Plans Major Chemical Recycling Facility in Rotterdam
WPU intends to establish a significant chemical recycling plant in Rotterdam to process 80,000 tonnes of plastic waste annually, boosting total capacity to 100,000 tonnes. This initiative supports the transition to circular feedstocks in the petrochemical sector, aligning with European sustainability goals.

WPU, the recycling division of Vitol, plans to build a facility in Rotterdam to process 80,000 tonnes of end-of-life plastics yearly, raising its total capacity to 100,000 tonnes. This plant will utilize proprietary pyrolysis technology to convert non-recyclable plastic waste into pyrolysis oil, serving as a circular feedstock for new plastics and chemicals.
The facility aims to be one of Europe's largest chemical recycling plants and supports the trend toward increased recycled content in manufacturing. It integrates advanced furnace technologies to reduce emissions, having achieved significant reductions in nitrogen oxide, sulfur dioxide, and energy use at Vitol's existing operations. This development underscores the drive for a circular economy and addresses global plastic waste challenges.
