Yarra Trams has launched the 'Trambassadors' initiative to enhance late-night travel safety for passengers in Melbourne. Teams of three Trambassadors are now deployed across tram routes 12, 19, 57, 86, 96, and 109.
Their role is to provide a friendly, trained presence to deter antisocial behavior and assist passengers feeling unsafe. The mixed-gender teams are trained in de-escalation, compassionate engagement, and trauma-informed practices.
They can be identified by their green and navy uniforms, along with a new Trambassador icon on the TramTracker app and at select stops. Passengers are encouraged to seek assistance from Trambassadors during their journeys. The program was co-designed with Yarra Trams employees and The Behavioural Architects, with research indicating that visible staff can make passengers feel 17% safer.
