Yoruba Monarchs Facilitate Sunday Igboho's Return to Nigeria After Four Years in Exile
Prominent Yoruba traditional rulers, including the Ooni of Ife, the Olubadan of Ibadan, and the Olugbon of Orile Igbon, have arranged for the return of Yoruba activist Sunday Igboho to Nigeria after four years in exile. His media aide, Olayomi Koiki, confirmed that Igboho is expected to return soon, pending clearance from the Presidency.
Igboho fled Nigeria in July 2021 due to a raid by the Department of State Services and the Nigerian Army, which led to the deaths of three aides and the arrest of 13 others. In 2025, Igboho expressed his desire to return and requested the removal of his name from the wanted list.
The previous administration had barred him from using a Nigerian passport and frozen his bank accounts. Koiki stated that with the support of the monarchs, Igboho is now cleared to return and has expressed gratitude to President Tinubu and others for their support.
