Zambia Army Commander Clarifies Remarks on Illegal Mining Operations
Zambia Army Commander Geoffrey Zyeele clarified that his earlier comments about troops 'exterminating' illegal miners were misinterpreted. During a meeting with Copperbelt Minister Elisha Matambo in Ndola, Zyeele stated that the operation primarily targets foreign nationals illegally conducting mining activities and armed with dangerous weapons.
The Army's focus is on national security, particularly concerning illegal mining, which poses risks to citizens. Minister Matambo commended President Hakainde Hichilema for fostering a peaceful environment conducive to economic development and reaffirmed the government's commitment to support the Army in combating illegal mining. He emphasized the importance of ensuring that mining activities adhere to principles of legality, safety, and security to prevent service disruptions for citizens.
