Zambia Copper Production Declines Despite Gains in Large-Scale Mining in Q1 2026
Zambia's copper production decreased by 4.27% in Q1 2026, totaling 208,992.66 metric tonnes. This decline stems from reduced small-scale mining output, even as large-scale operations saw a 1.8% increase, reflecting ongoing investments and operational improvements.
In Q1 2026, Zambia's copper production reached 208,992.66 metric tonnes, a decrease of 4.27% from the previous year. Large-scale mines contributed positively, with production rising from 195,418.89 metric tonnes to 198,930.17 metric tonnes.
Lumwana Mine led the growth with a 19.2% increase, while Konkola and Mopani posted gains of 22.02% and 4.39%, respectively. Conversely, small-scale operations saw a significant drop of 56.04% in production due to compliance issues.
Nickel production surged by 142.75%, and emerald production increased dramatically by 241.41%. The Minister announced no new mining licenses were issued during the quarter, pending the establishment of the Mining Licensing Committee.
