Brigadier General Charles Nakeempa of Zambia has been elected as the Commander of the Expanded Joint Verification Mechanism for the Democratic Republic of Congo by the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region Ministers of Defense. Colonel Arlindo Sebastiao Vandunem of Angola will serve as his deputy.

The meeting, which concluded over the weekend, addressed the escalating security situation in the DRC and involved participation from Ministers of Defence and Service Chiefs of 13 member countries. Vice President Mutale Nalumango emphasized the impact of the DRC's situation on regional peace and stability.
