Zeeland Study Explores SMR Potential to Support Energy Transition in Netherlands
The Province of Zeeland has commissioned the SMR Zeeland 2050 study to assess the potential of small modular reactors (SMRs) as a sustainable energy source, with commercial deployment anticipated between 2035 and 2040. The study recommends public-private cooperation starting in 2026/2027 as Zeeland considers new nuclear projects, including two reactors expected to generate 9-13% of the region's electricity by 2035, while the existing Borssele reactor is set to close in 2033, with a possible extension to 2054.

The Province of Zeeland commissioned the SMR Zeeland 2050 study, conducted by Tractebel and Haskoning, to explore small modular reactors (SMRs) as a sustainable energy source. Commercial deployment is projected for 2035-2040, with recommendations for cooperation between public and private sectors starting in 2026/2027.
Zeeland aims to support SMR projects while new nuclear units are also being considered, with existing Borssele reactor set to close in 2033 but possibly extended to 2054. The government plans to build two new reactors with a capacity of 1000-1650 MWe each, expected to supply 9-13% of electricity by 2035.
