Zimbabwean Student Wins UK Award for Clean-Fuel Cargo Ship Design
Tadiwa Nyikadzino, a 16-year-old student from Zimbabwe, has won the Network Rail Innovation in Transport Award at The Big Bang Competition for her clean-fuel cargo ship design. Her project aims to enhance sustainability in maritime shipping by generating hydrogen fuel on board using oceanic forces.

Tadiwa Nyikadzino, a Year 11 student at Outwood Academy Valley, was awarded the Network Rail Innovation in Transport Award at The Big Bang Competition for her project titled 'Generation Hybrid Cargo Ship Powered by Forces of the Ocean'. The design utilizes wind, water flow, and wave energy to produce hydrogen fuel, addressing the environmental concerns associated with traditional cargo shipping.
The Big Bang Fair, held from June 9 to 11, recognized young innovators in engineering and technology. Tadiwa, who relocated to the UK in 2023, aims to build a career in engineering. This achievement highlights the potential for innovative solutions in the shipping industry, emphasizing the need for sustainable practices amidst growing environmental challenges.
