25 Years of Geothermal Research at GFZ Groß Schönebeck: Industry-Impacting Projects

The GFZ Helmholtz Centre in Groß Schönebeck marks its 25th anniversary of geothermal research in 2026. This site has transformed an old gas exploration well into a research platform, yielding technologies now utilized globally.
The partnership with Green Therma introduces the DualVac™ vacuum pipe system for efficient heat transport from depths exceeding three kilometers. Previous projects have established innovative techniques for characterizing geothermal reservoirs and have integrated sustainable production technologies, which have set international standards.
By exploring the use of existing gas wells for geothermal applications, costs and environmental impacts may be reduced, facilitating broader adoption of geothermal energy in Germany. Growing interest in geothermal resources in Brandenburg and surrounding areas suggests future developments could significantly enhance renewable energy capabilities.
