50th Anniversary of LNG Imports to Japan Celebrated by Key Industry Players
Japan marks 50 years since the first LNG import, highlighting the evolving role of LNG in energy supply. Increased global demand for LNG is anticipated as it complements renewable energy sources.

On November 4, 2019, Japan celebrated the 50th anniversary of its first LNG import, which began in 1969 through a collaboration involving JERA, Tokyo Gas, Mitsubishi, and ConocoPhillips. The initial shipment from Alaska arrived at the Negishi LNG Terminal, marking a significant milestone in Japan's energy landscape.
The role of LNG is expected to expand, particularly in conjunction with renewable energy sources, to address rising energy demands. The four companies involved are hosting a ceremony on November 6, 2019, to commemorate this landmark event.
Additionally, the e5 Consortium has been established to develop zero-emission electric vessels for coastal shipping, addressing environmental concerns and the aging maritime workforce in Japan. The consortium aims to launch the world's first electric tanker by March 2022, promoting sustainable shipping practices.
