$5.9M Upgrade of Pātea Water Plant Enhances Drinking Water Quality
The Pātea water supply upgrade involves a $5.9 million investment to improve water quality and compliance with new standards. The installation of advanced filtration and disinfection systems aims to ensure safe drinking water and resilience against future water supply challenges.

Pātea's water supply is being upgraded with a $5.9 million investment to meet current drinking water standards and enhance reliability. New systems include biologically activated carbon filters, UV disinfection, and chlorine gas disinfection.
This initiative follows a temporary boil-water notice in September due to potential E. coli contamination, which was resolved two days later. The council implemented level one water restrictions in February after pump failures, urging residents to limit non-essential water use. These upgrades aim to maintain safe water quality while preventing future advisories.
