Airbus Sets Priorities for Next-Generation A320neo Replacement Development
Airbus is advancing the development of its next-generation single-aisle aircraft (NGSA) to replace the A320, targeting a 20-30% increase in fuel efficiency and compatibility with up to 100% sustainable aviation fuel, with an expected entry into service in the late 2030s. Key priorities include enhancing business sustainability, CO efficiency, and production capacity, aiming for up to 1,000 aircraft annually. The company is exploring various propulsion options, including CFM International's Open Fan engine, with flight tests planned to begin in 2029.

Airbus is reviewing options for its next-generation single-aisle aircraft (NGSA) A320 replacement, focusing on a 20-30% increase in fuel efficiency and the capability to use up to 100% sustainable aviation fuel. The NGSA aims for entry into service in the second half of the 2030s.
Key priorities include business sustainability for cost efficiency, sustainable performance measured by CO efficiency, and industrial efficiency for production capacity, targeting up to 1,000 aircraft per year. Airbus is evaluating propulsion options, including CFM International's Open Fan engine and alternatives from Pratt & Whitney and Rolls-Royce.
Flight tests of the Open Fan will occur on an A380 testbed under the Clean Aviation program. The Ofelia project aims for technology readiness by 2026, while the Take Off project plans Open Fan flight tests starting in 2029.
