Alberta to Reach Carbon Pricing Agreement with Federal Government, Announces $28 Million for Clean Tech Projects
Alberta is on track to finalize a carbon pricing agreement with the federal government, increasing the rate to $130 per tonne as per a memorandum of understanding (MOU) signed on Nov. 27. Environment Minister Grant Hunter announced $28 million for six clean tech projects that aim to create over 1,000 jobs and reduce emissions by 260,000 tonnes by 2030.
The funding comes from Emissions Reduction Alberta and will support projects including renewable natural gas facilities and carbon capture technologies. Alberta has committed to achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, and the MOU aligns carbon pricing with pipeline development. The agency has invested nearly $1 billion in over 316 projects since its inception.
