Alfa Cool Hellas Aims to Cut Cold Storage Electricity Costs for Greek Kiwifruit Producers
Alfa Cool Hellas is working to reduce electricity costs for Greek kiwifruit producers by 40% through the implementation of alternative cooling technologies, amid rising energy prices exacerbated by the war in Ukraine. The company has completed two kiwifruit warehouse projects in Agrinio and Arta, but faces challenges as current storage capacity falls 50% short of production needs, compounded by bureaucratic obstacles to further investment.

Alfa Cool Hellas aims to reduce electricity costs for cooling chambers by 40% to levels from ten years ago amid rising energy prices in Greece. Since 2020, electricity costs have increased significantly, exacerbated by the war in Ukraine, prompting Greek fruit and vegetable producers to seek solutions to limit consumption.
The company is implementing alternative cooling technologies using ammonia, carbon dioxide, and glycol systems. In 2025, it completed two kiwifruit warehouse projects in Agrinio and Arta, with capacities of 10,000 kg and 5,000 kg respectively.
This development is intended to enhance local production capabilities compared to established kiwifruit regions. However, the CEO notes that current storage capacity is insufficient, with production volume exceeding storage by 50%, and bureaucratic hurdles are hindering further investments in new facilities.
