Alphaliner Reports Trend of Scrubber Technology in Dual Fuel Container Ships
Alphaliner has reported a growing trend of dual fuel container ships being equipped with scrubber technology, allowing them to operate on conventional fuels despite their design for LNG or methanol. The EU's 2024 carbon pricing regulations have made green fuels more accessible, yet concerns about emissions compliance persist as some carriers opt for cheaper fuels. Notably, while many methanol dual-fuel ships lack scrubbers, certain models, such as those from HMM, do include them, highlighting the ongoing cost disparity between green and conventional fuels.

Alphaliner has noted that dual fuel container ships are being built with scrubber technology, enabling operation on conventional fuels, despite being designed for LNG or methanol. The EU's 2024 carbon pricing regulations have made green fuels more affordable, but shippers may question emissions compliance if carriers use cheaper fuels.
Some ships, like MSC's LNG-powered vessels, initially lacked scrubbers but later deliveries included them. Most methanol dual-fuel ships do not feature scrubbers, though some, like HMM's, do. The cost disparity between green and conventional fuels remains significant, as seen with X-Press Feeders' methanol vessels, which are expected to run on conventional fuels by Q1 2026 due to customer price resistance.
