In a significant step toward renewable energy exploration, Antrim's council has granted the Department for the Economy planning permission to establish a 40-meter drilling rig intended for geothermal energy assessment. This ambitious project will see the drilling of two boreholes, extending over a mile deep, to investigate the geothermal potential beneath Antrim town.

The drilling site, strategically located between Oldstone Road and Seven Mile Straight, is poised for a temporary operation estimated to last approximately 14 months. Alicia Leathem, a planning officer, informed the Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council's planning committee that drilling is projected to reach depths of 1,750 meters, with temperatures at these depths expected to range between 70 to 80 degrees Celsius.

Despite the considerable height of the drilling rig, which will be brought to the site after initial operations with a smaller rig, the council has received no objections from the public. The anticipated impact on nearby residents is deemed manageable, limited to a four-month period of active drilling, which will occur around the clock.

The project aims to evaluate the feasibility of harnessing geothermal resources to provide efficient and affordable heating and cooling solutions, ultimately contributing to decarbonization efforts in the region. Notably, the application does not include plans for extracting water for electricity generation, focusing solely on assessing the ground conditions.

Consultant engineer Conor Leighton assured the council that the exploration process would not involve fracking, a concern raised by Alliance Councillor Tom Campbell. The drilling will be confined to a low-impact operation, taking into account factors such as air quality, noise, and vibration, all of which have been assessed to minimize disruption to the local community.

The council’s unanimous approval of the proposal reflects a growing recognition of the potential benefits of renewable energy projects, with members expressing confidence in the project's ability to mitigate any environmental impacts through recommended measures. As Antrim moves forward with this initiative, the potential for a significant renewable energy source lies just beneath the surface, promising to reshape the town's energy landscape.
