Armenia's Conscription Rates Increase by 25%, Defense Ministry Rebuffs Legislative Changes
Armenia's Deputy Defense Minister reported a 25% rise in conscription from 2023 to 2026 compared to 2022. This development counters lawmaker Hayk Sargsyan's proposal for changes aimed at addressing perceived military manpower shortages.

The Armenian Ministry of Defense announced a 25% increase in conscription numbers between 2023 and 2026, compared to 2022, contradicting MP Hayk Sargsyan's claims of a manpower crisis. Sargsyan proposed legislative changes to raise the conscription age and allow fee-based exemptions from service; however, these measures were rejected by the ministry and parliamentary committee.
The Deputy Minister emphasized that recent legal reforms have positively influenced enlistment rates, with over 5,300 participants in the 'Defender of the Homeland' program indicating a shift towards a professional military. The rejection of the bill suggests ongoing challenges in addressing military personnel issues without effective legislative solutions.
