Army Corps Initiates Final Phase of West Shore Lake Pontchartrain Project
The Army Corps of Engineers has commenced the final phase of the West Shore Lake Pontchartrain Project, a $4 billion initiative aimed at protecting River Parish communities from significant storm surges. A recent $419 million contract has been awarded for key project features, including a pump station and drainage structures.

The West Shore Lake Pontchartrain Project, which will extend 18.5 miles from the Bonnet Carré Spillway to Garyville, is currently 35% complete. The total project cost is estimated at $4 billion, with benefits expected to be realized by 2030.
Key components include 11 floodwalls, seven drainage structures, five gates, and two pump stations, all designed to mitigate storm surge risks, especially following recent hurricanes. The project aims to significantly enhance protection for local businesses and residents in St.
John the Baptist Parish, particularly along I-10, a vital evacuation route. Completion is anticipated to reduce storm surge risks experienced during events like Hurricane Ida.
