Army Targets 2028 for Full Qualification of Improved Turbine Engine Program
The U.S. Army plans to achieve full qualification for the Improved Turbine Engine Program (ITEP) by 2028, contingent on funding. The program aims to replace existing T700 engines with the new T901 engine, enhancing performance and efficiency for key aircraft.

The U.S. Army's Improved Turbine Engine Program (ITEP), also known as the T901 engine, aims for full qualification by 2028, with a $175 million funding boost from Congress. Originally set for delivery in 2022, the program faced delays due to supply chain issues and funding lapses, which nearly led to its cancellation.
The Army has conducted approximately 30 hours of flight tests since the first flight test in May and requires about 6,500 hours of total testing for full qualification. The ITEP is intended to replace the T700 engines in AH-64 Apaches and UH-60 Black Hawks, promising a 50% increase in horsepower and 25% better fuel efficiency. The Army has not disclosed the current testing hours completed.
