Australia's Defence Secures $5.7 Million for Counter-Drone Development
The Albanese Government has awarded a $5.7 million contract to Electro Optic Systems for counter-drone capabilities under Mission Syracuse, bringing total funding to $37.4 million. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to enhance the Australian Defence Force's (ADF) response to emerging threats from uncrewed aerial systems.

Electro Optic Systems (EOS) Defence Systems has been contracted to develop the R400 SLINGER Counter Uncrewed Aerial Systems (CUAS) capability as part of the Advanced Strategic Capabilities Accelerator's (ASCA) Mission Syracuse. This $5.7 million contract increases total investment in Mission Syracuse to $37.4 million, contributing to a $22 billion allocation over the next decade for drone and counter-drone technologies.
The R400 SLINGER, an advanced weapon system integrating a laser-guided rocket and machine gun, will be manufactured in Australia, supporting local industry. Previous investments in AIM Defence and SYPAQ Systems are also underway to advance related technologies. This partnership demonstrates a focused effort to rapidly enhance ADF capabilities against evolving drone threats.
