Axens Initiates France's First Industrial Bioethanol SAF Project
Axens has launched the Ethanol to Refuel Aviation (ERA) project, marking France's inaugural industrial-scale Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) facility. Scheduled for operation in 2030, the facility aims to produce 50,000 tonnes of SAF annually, supporting the country's low-carbon aviation goals.

The Ethanol to Refuel Aviation (ERA) project, initiated by Axens, is set to begin operations in 2030 with a production capacity of 50,000 tonnes of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) per year. Developed by Safiris, the project utilizes JETANOL technology from Axens and IFP Energies nouvelles (IFPEN), which converts advanced bioethanol into SAF from European biomass feedstocks.
This initiative responds to rising SAF demand due to European regulations, with expectations of over one million tonnes required annually for flights from France by 2035. The facility will enhance existing SAF production methods and support energy transition goals by creating a domestic SAF supply chain. As the aviation sector contributes significantly to global warming, this project is critical for decarbonisation efforts.
