Bengaluru to Generate Rs 120 Crore Annually from Biogas Project
The Bengaluru government has approved a biogas project to monetize 200 tonnes of sewage sludge daily, projected to earn Rs 120 crore annually. This initiative, under a public-private partnership, aims to enhance energy security while reducing financial burden on local bodies.

The Karnataka government has sanctioned a biogas initiative utilizing 200 tonnes of sludge from Bengaluru's wastewater treatment plants, projected to generate Rs 120 crore annually. The project will operate under a public-private partnership, with private entities responsible for an Rs 85 crore capital expenditure and operational costs over a 20-year period.
Initially, five treatment plants will be involved, producing 550 MLD of sewage water. The sludge's high organic matter content allows for effective biogas production via anaerobic digestion. This strategy not only aims to provide financial returns but also supports Bengaluru's energy security by utilizing waste for energy production. The project is expected to serve as a model for similar initiatives across India.
