BGE to Install Underground Transmission Line Amid Uncertainty at Baltimore Peninsula Development
Baltimore Gas and Electric (BGE) plans to begin street construction in early 2026 for an underground transmission line to support the growth of South Baltimore. This project, deemed critical for future development, coincides with Under Armour founder Kevin Plank's decision to withdraw from further development at Baltimore Peninsula, handing over land to Bank OZK.
Currently, only a fraction of the originally proposed development has been built. BGE aims to invest over $130 million in a new substation and related infrastructure, costs borne by ratepayers. Critics argue this spending may lead to increased energy bills.
The transmission line will connect Greene and Gould Street substations, traversing several neighborhoods. Local officials express concerns about the necessity and impact of the project, especially after recent changes in development plans at Baltimore Peninsula.
