Bhutan to Lead Project on Sustainable Aviation Fuel and Biodegradable Plastics
Bhutan will be the main research and certification hub for a project converting Pongamia seeds into sustainable aviation fuel and biodegradable plastics. This initiative involves a partnership between Ecopha and DrukBees Private Limited, aiming to scale the model for global economies.

A new initiative in Bhutan aims to produce sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and biodegradable plastics from Pongamia tree seeds, establishing the country as a key research and certification hub. The project, launched in Thimphu, is a collaboration between Ecopha and DrukBees Private Limited.
Initially focused on localized demonstration models, the initiative plans to cultivate Pongamia trees, leveraging the oil from their seeds for SAF and utilizing residual materials for biodegradable plastics. Nganglam has been identified for initial plantations, with planting set for September.
An advanced traceability system will ensure compliance and integrity, facilitating the development of a global certification standard. The project aims to mature over five years, positioning Bhutan as a leader in sustainable aviation product certification for larger markets.
