BioCarbon Receives $4.8 Million Funding from ARENA for Biochar Coke Project in NSW
BioCarbon has secured $4.8 million from ARENA to advance its first commercial-scale biochar coke project in Bulahdelah, NSW. This funding supports the transition from pilot to industrial-scale production of GreenChar, a net-zero alternative to traditional metallurgical coke used in steelmaking. The facility aims to produce renewable carbon products, enabling emissions reduction at cost parity with conventional coke. BioCarbon will also provide GreenChar for trials to industry partners, facilitating future supply partnerships.

BioCarbon has received $4.8 million in funding from the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) to develop its first commercial-scale biochar coke project in Bulahdelah, NSW. This project aims to replace traditional metallurgical coke with GreenChar, a net-zero renewable carbon alternative, in electric arc furnace steelmaking.
The facility will support emissions reduction and is part of ARENA's National Industrial Transformation Program. BioCarbon's goal is to provide GreenChar at cost parity with conventional coke while allowing selected industry partners to trial the product. The technology has been validated, with successful trials demonstrating GreenChar's capability to replace charge coke in steel production.
