Biofuel and Supersonic Aviation Developments Impacting Airline Industry
The airline sector is adjusting to a revised biofuel landscape and the revival of supersonic travel, with new ICAO regulations tightening environmental standards. Addressing fuel supply and price issues is crucial as airlines navigate operational challenges amid geopolitical tensions.

The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) has adopted new technical standards for CO2 emissions, tightening them 10% for new aircraft designs from 2031. The US House of Representatives recently passed the Supersonic Aviation Modernisation Act, permitting civil supersonic flights under specific noise conditions.
Airlines are reporting increased jet fuel prices, with New Zealand's geographical isolation further complicating costs. O'Brien emphasized the need for fuel onshoring and the viability of biofuels, while also noting that electric aircraft may serve short-haul routes.
The Minister of Finance indicated that government interventions are necessary due to fuel market volatility caused by external conflicts. New regulations will also require supersonic aircraft to comply with current noise limits starting in 2029, potentially revitalizing this segment of air travel.
