Biomethane Growth and Regulation in Europe and Brazil
The International Energy Agency forecasts biomethane will enhance Europe's energy security post-Ukraine crisis, with Brazil also having vast potential. The European Union aims to produce 35 billion cubic meters of biomethane by 2030 under the REPowerEU plan.

Biomethane production in Europe is currently around 5 billion cubic meters annually, with over 1,600 operational plants. The new ISCC regulations, effective from late 2025, will tighten sustainability certification for biomethane, impacting market practices.
Brazil, with a technical potential exceeding 120 million cubic meters per day, is emerging as a significant market, particularly due to agricultural biomass. The country has dozens of authorized production plants across several states, with São Paulo leading at 40% of total production.
The Brazilian market is projected to grow by 215% by 2027 with the establishment of 35 new plants, driven by legislation supporting low-emission fuels. Global biomethane market value is expected to rise from $6.95 billion in 2025 to $10.74 billion by 2034.
