Bulgaria Launches 16M Euro Hydrogen Valley Project at Thracian University
Bulgaria's first hydrogen valley project, ZAHYR, is launched at Thracian University with a 16 million euro investment from the EU's Horizon Europe program. The initiative aims to produce up to 1,650 kg of clean hydrogen daily, creating a sustainable energy model to replace coal-fired power. The project, coordinated by the international consortium TERTIUS, includes the creation of an integrated ecosystem for hydrogen generation, storage, transport, and industrial use. Official work commenced following extensive preparatory phases since 2022.

The ZAHYR project, announced at Thracian University in Stara Zagora, Bulgaria, represents a 16 million euro investment from the European Horizon Europe Clean Hydrogen program. It aims to establish the first hydrogen valley in Bulgaria, focusing on producing up to 1,650 kilograms of clean hydrogen per day as a sustainable alternative to coal energy.
The project will develop a comprehensive ecosystem for hydrogen generation, storage, and transport, coordinated by the TERTIUS consortium. Official construction commenced recently after significant preparatory work began in 2022.
