California's Salton Sea is estimated to have 3.4 million tons of lithium, sufficient for 375 million EV batteries. This finding could significantly reduce U.S. reliance on lithium imports, predominantly sourced from Argentina and Chile.
The current extraction from geothermal brine produces about 127,000 metric tons of lithium carbonate equivalent annually. Direct Lithium Extraction (DLE) technology enhances efficiency, consuming 99% less water than traditional methods.
However, extraction at scale remains unproven and dependent on new facilities. Concerns over environmental impacts, including water use and local seismic activity, must be addressed as development progresses.
