CalMac Fleet Crisis: Glen Sannox and Multiple Ferries Out of Service
CalMac's Glen Sannox is currently out of operation due to a recurring technical issue, contributing to one-third of its fleet being unavailable. This situation highlights significant operational challenges for ferry services in Scotland, affecting connectivity for island residents and prompting governmental scrutiny.

CalMac reports that one-third of its fleet, including the Glen Sannox, is currently out of service, impacting critical routes such as Troon to Brodick. The Glen Sannox is facing recurring fuel pump issues after recently returning from repairs, having spent roughly 25% of its operational life in disrepair, with repair costs projected at £3.2 million.
The ferry is expected to be redeployed to the Western Isles if repairs are successful, and it is slated for berthing trials before operating the Oban-Barra route. Concurrently, other ferries like Lord of the Isles and Isle of Cumbrae are also experiencing technical issues, leading to numerous route cancellations. The Scottish government is facilitating the construction of three new ferries and seven electric vessels to alleviate the crisis, while calls for parliamentary discussions on the situation are increasing as the May election approaches.
