Cape Town Military Land Development for Housing Gains Momentum
The South African government is progressing towards developing military land in Cape Town for housing, potentially yielding 67,000 homes. The initiative aims to address a significant housing backlog affecting approximately 400,000 families in the city.

The South African government is moving forward with plans to develop military land in Cape Town, specifically at Ysterplaat, Wingfield, and Youngsfield, which could yield an estimated 67,000 homes. Human settlements minister Thembi Simelane confirmed that public works minister Dean Macpherson is engaging with the army and managing the necessary paperwork for land release.
Public Works spokesperson Lennox Mabaso emphasized the urgency of unlocking state-owned land to support new housing models that involve the private sector. Macpherson aims to establish a clear policy direction by year-end to facilitate construction.
However, experts warn that effective coordination among various departments is essential for successful implementation. The City of Cape Town has long urged the release of military land to address its housing crisis.
