CFB Shilo to Operate New HIMARS Rocket Systems for Canadian Armed Forces
CFB Shilo will serve as the main operational hub for 26 HIMARS systems, enhancing Canada's long-range strike capabilities by 2029. This acquisition aligns with Canada's 2024 Defence Policy, aimed at deterring threats and maintaining a strategic advantage.

The Canadian Armed Forces has designated CFB Shilo as the primary operation center for 26 High-Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS), set to be delivered by Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control in 2029. This initiative is part of Canada's 2024 Defence Policy, focusing on long-range strike capabilities to counter threats.
HIMARS will be integrated with the existing 1st Regiment, Royal Canadian Horse Artillery, and will lay the groundwork for the formation of a new unit, the 9th Rocket Regiment. The system's 'shoot-and-scoot' capability enhances operational flexibility and survivability in high-threat environments.
Additionally, the base is preparing for significant growth, including the construction of 180 new homes at an estimated cost of $84 million. The impact on personnel numbers remains unconfirmed.
