Chesapeake Utilities Tests Hydrogen Blends at Eight Flags Energy CHP Plant in Florida
Chesapeake Utilities conducted hydrogen combustion tests at the Eight Flags Energy site in Nassau County, Florida. The facility tested a 5% hydrogen blend in its gas turbine and HRSG, achieving improved emissions and turbine output. Potential options for incorporating green hydrogen are being explored, although natural gas remains the primary fuel. Existing HRSG design accommodates hydrogen combustion, but higher blends may require modifications. Successful trials included emissions compliance testing with no NOx spikes detected.

Chesapeake Utilities has tested a 5% hydrogen blend at the Eight Flags Energy CHP plant in Nassau County, Florida. The tests evaluated the turbine and heat recovery steam generator (HRSG) performance, leading to improved emissions and a slight turbine output increase.
Current modifications allow the turbine to operate on a 4% hydrogen blend without HRSG changes. Management is considering options for green hydrogen, including transportation from Kingsland, GA, or onsite generation.
While 5% hydrogen is the practical limit, higher blends may necessitate turbine and HRSG modifications due to hydrogen's lower BTU value and potential condensation issues. The facility is equipped to handle modest hydrogen levels, and further trials have confirmed emissions compliance.
