Chile Introduces T-40 Newen Trainer Aircraft for Pilot Training Modernization
The T-40 Newen trainer aircraft aims to revolutionize pilot training in Chile, replacing the T-35 Pillán fleet. This initiative integrates advanced digital tools and training systems, enhancing operational readiness for future pilots.

The Chilean Air Force has launched the T-40 Newen, a new trainer aircraft designed to replace the T-35 Pillán fleet, which has been in service since 1985. The T-40 Newen will undergo structural testing, with plans for prototype '01' to conduct its first flight potentially next year.
This aircraft is part of a broader digitized training ecosystem that includes simulators and mission planning tools aimed at familiarizing trainees with advanced operational environments. Series production is projected to start by late 2027, with an initial order of 33 aircraft planned.
The T-40 program also supports local aerospace capabilities by involving domestic suppliers, which may ultimately reduce reliance on foreign technology and enhance long-term maintenance. This transition may redefine pilot training methodologies in Chile, emphasizing a structured progression toward higher-performance aircraft.
